Rustic Retreat on Squam Lake, New Hampshire

Located on one of Squam Lake’s rare private peninsulas, Camp Finisterre offers the greatest luxury of all: simple living in a spectacular setting.

This former fishing camp-turned-family getaway is a throwback to an unplugged era. From the moment you leave your car behind and begin the short walk down the blueberry-lined path (your first glimpse of Finisterre’s 2,000 feet of shoreline), you will feel like you have arrived back at summer camp. Just as then, all you’ll need is your swimsuit and a good book.

Finisterre was constructed on this “end of the earth” promontory in the early 20th century. Set on an acre of land surrounded on nearly all sides by water, the camp hosted anglers, including President Cleveland, who flocked to its clear green waters, sandy-bottomed coves, and rocky shoals. It was converted to a family retreat that was purchased in 1957 by the Brown family who in the ensuing decades have welcomed family, friends, and, more recently, renters to its peaceful embrace.

From the beginning, Finisterre has been a special place for all ages to gather. The spacious, shingled house (3,900 square feet including its wide, covered porches) have been renovated and yet have maintained their vintage charm, with bead board siding, wood framed windows, indoor/outdoor living, and a mix of modest New England furnishings. It is wonderfully comfortable, though nothing here is precious, save kinship and nature.

Simply put, the camp invites relaxing. Free of modern life’s distractions, your biggest decision may be whether to take a dip in the lake or a nap on the porch. Come sunset, you can gather for a sun downer on the west-facing dock, convene for supper in the large, eat-in kitchen, and move your party to the fire ring at the end of the point for s’mores. Finally, retire to one of the camp’s airy bedrooms where you will fall asleep to the calls of loons and the lapping of waves.

Rentals

We are looking forward to your stay at Camp Finisterre! We feel honored to be able to share our little spot with new and returning families. While Finisterre is our favorite place to be, it is not the right fit for everyone, so we like to talk to you before renting.
A couple unique qualities about our camp- septic system and parking:

-We have found that we need to implement a maximum of 12 guests at any time, due to the sensitive septic system. This includes any visiting day guests.
-We have only 2 parking spots deeded to us. From those spots, you'll need to carry or wheelbarrow your supplies out the causeway to the point, where the house is located. Unfortunately, it is not handicapped accessible. There is a small overflow parking area that we are allowed to use, but it can only fit 4-5 cars. At no time can cars be parked in the road nor blocking access to our neighbors' land.

When scheduling, we give priority to returning renters, some of whom have been coming to Camp Finisterre on Squam Lake for longer than we have. Planning the summer schedule is a bit of a jigsaw puzzle, but if your dates are flexible, we will be more likely to find a week that works for your stay. We will begin the summer scheduling in October-November the year before.
Please contact Tucker to discuss your interest.
